Nigel Lawson – Former Chancellor of the Exchequer Nigel Lawson was of course the Chancellor of the Exchequer at the time of Margaret Thatcher’s office as Prime Minister. He rose quickly through the political ranks, eventually becoming a key and visible figure alongside the Prime Minister and shaping the economic and fiscal policies of the United Kingdom, often with controversial results. He was also responsible for the energy sector’s privatisation in his role as secretary of Stage for Energy, holding this role until he became chancellor.
Lord Lawson was a huge media character during his tenure as Chancellor, a role he held for most of the Thatcher years. He later wrote a hugely acclaimed and popular book called ‘The view from No.10 – Memoirs of a Tory Radical’ which were full of his memories, his views on economics and politics and his stance on hot economic topics such as Europe, the single European currency, modern democracy and unemployment. At a time when the issue of Europe and Britain’s role within it is subject to ongoing debate, his arguments still have great relevance today.
Lord Lawson today Nowadays Lord Lawson is involved in a wide range of other roles, including his Chairmanship at Oxford Investment Partners, an organisation which is owned primarily by the Oxford colleges. He was until recently the President of the UK’s British Institute of Energy Economics. His role within business and economics doesn’t end there however. Lord Lawson is also Chairman of the Central Europe Trust, which is a private equity and advice organisation focused on Eastern and Central Europe.
